Special Investigations Unit – S.I.U.

The Special Investigations Unit or S.I.U. is a proactive unit that was created to handle specific problems throughout the City. This team was newly formed in August of 2021 with the merger of the Gang Unit and Directed Enforcement Team.

S.I.U. utilizes innovative investigation techniques to solve problems and crime trends. Detectives in the Special Investigations Unit possess the ability to saturate a certain sector to address problems such as spikes in crime or nuisance activities.

The S.I.U. team is still responsible for the suppression/enforcement of gang activity. Through a combination of high-visibility uniformed patrols and plainclothes surveillance, S.I.U. meets the challenges of suppressing gang activity, and uses directed enforcement as a means of holding gang members accountable. The S.I.U. Unit also works collaboratively with other gang units from several surrounding agencies.

Special Investigation members are trained in surveillance techniques and work an adjusted schedule which allows them the time and resources necessary to apprehend elusive suspects, such as burglars, robbery suspects, gang members, or other criminals that may be more difficult for uniformed patrol officers to apprehend. The Special Investigations Unit works with local community leaders to address quality of life issues in the community. Team members serve as a resource for various community groups in the form of providing training, and they provide valuable support to units within the Department.

Officers assigned to the Special Investigations unit, must agree to work a modified schedule and make themselves available 24-hours a day, seven days a week, to rapidly respond in where needed.
