The Police Explorers are a division of the Boy Scouts of America. Explorer Post 204 is a Law Enforcement Post sponsored by the Fullerton Police Department. The Fullerton Police Explorer Post began in 1975, and since then, there have been many Explorers who have gone on to successful careers, not only in law enforcement, but throughout the job field. The Post introduces young people to police work, and the various aspects of law enforcement, with an emphasis on community service.

Membership

Membership is open to young men and women who have an interest in the field of law enforcement. Applicants must:

• Be between the ages of 14 - 18,
• Must have completed the eighth grade,
• Must maintain a 2.0 or a "C" average in school,
• Be of good moral character,
• Cannot have a serious arrest record.

After acceptance, members may remain in the program until their 19th birthday.

Applicants are required:

• To attend three consecutive meetings,
• Successfully pass an oral examination, given by the Post Advisor(s),
• Submit an application
• And may be subject to a background and polygraph investigation.

Once an applicant has been accepted, the Explorer then becomes a member, and will be assigned to a squad. The Post has different levels of rank from Explorer to Explorer Captain. The Explorer Captain is in charge of the Post members. A Post Advisor, who is a sworn Police Officer, is responsible for the entire Post.

Meetings

Meetings are held at the Fullerton Police Department on Wednesday nights from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be occasions when the Post may meet at a site away from the Department to participate in training exercises.

Meetings consist of:

• Training films,
• Demonstrations,
• Guest speakers,
• Marching and drill exercises,
• Lectures,
• Performance tests, and
• Physical training.

Duties

While involved in Exploring activities, Police Explorers may assist the Police Officers by performing non-hazardous duties which could include:

• Report writing,
• Bicycle safety programs,
• Crowd and traffic control at parades and civic events,
• Child fingerprinting, and Color guard.

Explorer Academy

The Explorers are required to attend an Explorer Academy during their first year in the Post. The Academy is sponsored by the Orange County Law Enforcement Advisor's Association.

The live-in style academy is held over a five day period at a designated location. The Academy is similar to a military "boot" camp and may be based at a local military base. The Explorers receive training from Police Officers in all phases of police work. Upon graduation, the Explorer will receive a certificate of completion.
