The California Vehicle Code authorizes law enforcement agencies to impound or store vehicles for a variety of reasons, typically related to criminal activity. Below are some of the reasons that a vehicle may be impounded or stored under section 22651 CVC:

  • When a vehicle is left unattended in such a manner that it creates an obstruction to traffic.
  • When a vehicle has been reported stolen and is located.
  • When a vehicle is parked in a manner that blocks a driveway.
  • When a vehicle is parked in a manner that blocks emergency equipment.
  • When the driver of a vehicle is arrested.
  • When the vehicle meets the criteria for being a Scofflaw Vehicle.
  • When the vehicle is illegally parked in a handicapped space.
  • When the driver of a vehicle is unlicensed or has a suspended license.

In the event that the vehicle is impounded or stored, the registered owner is responsible for paying any fees associated with the storage, including an administrative fee, as well as towing and storage fees.

If you are the registered owner of a vehicle that was impounded or stored by the Fullerton Police Department, it is your responsibility to pay the fees associated with the storage. You may come to the Fullerton Police Department front desk to make the payment. You must be the registered owner of the vehicle and either be licensed, or have a licensed driver with you in order to receive a vehicle release form.

How Much Is the Impound Fee?

Depending on the reason for the vehicle being impounded or stored, the rates vary. Listed below are the current rates (subject to change) for impound fees:

  • DUI-related incidents: $285.00 dollars.
  • Non-DUI-related incidents: $220.00 dollars.

How Do I Get My Car Back?

Once the registered owner has paid the impound fee, the Fullerton Police Department will provide a vehicle release form. That form can then be taken to the tow yard, where the vehicle is stored; however, it is the registered owner’s responsibility to pay any storage fees accrued by the tow yard.
