Morelia, the capital of the state of Michoacán, lies several hours west of Mexico City.  It is one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico and one of the most historic. Since becoming Fullerton's first Sister City in 1965, many FSCA Ambassadors have returned to tell us of its hospitality and authentic Mexican culture.

The city is a blend of both modern amenities and ancient treasures, including the famous Catedral de Morelia (pictured above), where a breathtaking lighting ceremony takes place every Saturday night.  Nearby towns boast artisans in a wide array of crafts: copper, pottery, guitars and even specialty Christmas ornaments.

Because so many residents of Fullerton— in fact, many Californians—have ties to Mexico, it seemed only natural Fullerton’s first sister city would be found across our shared border. Morelia was proposed and citizens of Fullerton including the first FSCA president Art Gratner, made the inaugural trip south in May of 1965 to seal the deal. The visit was reciprocated two months later, and in July 1965, a second signing celebration was held. A magnolia tree was planted outside of City Hall to commemorate and celebrate the new sisterhood. 

Since the first Sister City visit over fifty years ago, Fullerton and Morelia residents have journeyed back and forth on a regular basis, and the tradition of friendship is flourishing like the magnolia tree beside Fullerton City Hall.
